Embracing the “Outsider”

In most Indian families, a man remains dear/ adorable/ pampered/ loved by his immediate family – but his spouse may not enjoy the same space. She may just be tolerated – as family, or downright rejected, or made fun of, or not respected/ loved/ accepted. (It can happen with a man as well; where he feels the same in his wife’s family.)

Embracing the "Outsider"

In many families, if the man shouts at his wife (or puts her down in some manner), the rest of the family encourages/ supports him – implying that she deserves it.

The traditional wisdom says that if your spouse doesn’t enjoy the same status as you in your birth family, it is your disrespect – more than his/hers.

Do you have anything to say on this subject? I am all ears.
